Designing Themed Accommodation: The Tuscan Experience

Bringing Italian charm to South African vineyards

The Tuscan Experience project began with a simple question: can a guesthouse in the Cape Winelands genuinely feel like a corner of Tuscany? Our team set out to design a themed accommodation that replicates the quiet, rustic elegance of an Italian convent — without turning it into a caricature.

From terracotta floor tiles to hand-finished arched windows, every detail was chosen to transport guests the moment they step through the door. We sourced local materials that matched the Italian palette: warm ochre plasters, wrought-iron bed frames, and linen drapes in muted earth tones. The result is a space that feels both foreign and familiar — a deliberate tension that sparks curiosity.

Guest feedback has been revealing. Many visitors comment on the sense of calm, the absence of clutter, and the way natural light moves through the rooms. A few noted that the themed decor made them more aware of the cultural borrowing — which led us to add small informational cards in each room explaining the design choices and the heritage behind them. That simple addition turned a potential point of critique into a conversation starter.

Operationally, we adjusted a few things after the first season. The terracotta tiles, while beautiful, required more frequent sealing in the high-traffic areas. We swapped out some decorative ceramics for sturdier, locally made alternatives that matched the colour scheme. These tweaks didn't dilute the theme — they made it more sustainable.

Designing a themed space inspired by another country's heritage demands care. It's not about copying, but about translating a feeling into a new context. The Tuscan Experience works because it respects its source while being honest about where it lives. Guests leave with a memory of Italy — and a story about South Africa.
